As I type, Usher’s “These Are My Confessions” is on repeat. It’s time to let you in on one of my secrets. It’s not that hidden, but people are often surprised when I tell them. I’m nervous! Alas, here it goes.
I love celebrities. I check Perez Hilton’s blog a minimum of 7 times a day. I’m obsessed with E-News, I watch way too many celeb-related reality TV shows and I buy magazines just to read the cover model’s interviews.
I’m often asked why I waste my time keeping up with celebrity gossip. I don’t see it as a time-waster; I’m just so fascinated by it all, the way fame changes people, how celebrities form these crazy personalities and the fashion—oh the fashion!
Anyone whose interested in celeb-culture has one particular event that they look forward to each year. Mine you may ask? The Costume Institute Gala at the MET (aka The MET Ball or MET Gala). On this night, the couture is more risky, celebrities are a better reflection of themselves and their taste and fashion designers get the recognition they deserve. It’s better than the Oscars or the Emmys because you never know what’s coming. It’s always surprising.
This year, I’m going to let you in on my post-MET Gala ritual. The morning after, I sit down with a ginormous cup of coffee and scour the internet to see what went down on the red carpet. Then I make three lists: Best Dressed Ladies, Best Dressed Gentlemen and Surprises. (So much happiness)!
And now I’m going to share my choices with you (in no particular order):
Best Dressed Ladies:
—Marion Cotillard: I can’t stop marveling over this Dior gown. It’s so playful, having casual qualities — like a thin checkered pattern skirt and a deceptive mini dress — while still managing to have a high-fashion look.
—Nina Dobrev: Stunning—a perfect reflection of old Hollywood glamour. This Donna Karan Atelier gown falls perfectly, like a cascade of black and gold.
—Kristen Wiig: Stella McCartney is one of my three favorite designers, so I’m biased. But I love the vintage edge to this dress and think it perfectly captures Wiig’s personality.
—Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: She manages to make this more conservative Burberry design sexy. It’s like a marriage of her career as both a Burberry and Victoria Secret model.
—Sarah Jessica Parker: Dang-it! No one keeps me guessing more than SJP. She makes complicated choices every time. In this Valentino gown, she knew how to pose and carry the fabric to make it work for her not against her. It’s also fun and trendy but still formal, which is exactly what this night is all about.
Best Dressed Gentlemen:
—Tom Ford: No explanation needed. He’s perfection in his own design.
—Ed Westwick: In Prada. I know he looks like he just stepped off the set of Gossip Girl, but when he’s in a suit, he never fails.
—Zac Posen: Who else could wear a wine colored suit and still manage to look this dapper? Wearing himself.
—John Krasinski: He’s funny, he went to Brown, he married Emily Blunt and he looks hot in this Calvin Klein suit… what a winner!
Surprises:
—Hilary Swank: She just looks lovely! She normally wears darker or more neutral hues and I like how she varied her look by wearing a bright and bold Michael Kors gown.
—Cameron Diaz: I never like her red carpet choices, but she looks dazzling in this Stella McCartney design.
—Chelsea Clinton: A politically correct choice in Isaac Mizrahi; however, Chelsea has made major strides in her fashion choices, hence why she’s on my Surprises list.
—Christina Ricci: This Thakoon dress is fascinating. So complex and yet, it doesn’t overwhelm her tiny frame. Reminds me of origami.
I know a lot of you have strong opinions on the fashions at the MET Gala as well. Who made your Best Dressed lists? I’m so curious.
