Letter to New York

Dear New York,IMG_3596

Right after moving here, I received some great advice from my high school friend Scott. He explained that living in the City is a lot like being in a relationship. It may pull you down some days, but if you’re good to it, it’ll be good to you.

We’ve certainly had our ups and downs over the years. I’ve never experienced such a flippant sense of love for a place. You’ve sure taught me a lot though—that can’t be denied.

One thing that I’m struggling with in my fourth-ish year here is the utter sense of hate I’m seeing. It’s around every day. A woman screaming at her crying infant to “shut up;” the injustice on the streets; angry people on crowded trains, pushing each other around like pinballs, not human beings. It’s like we’ve forgotten that we’re people first, deserving of a little kindness.

Five Favorite NYC Spots

After living in New York City for over 4 years, I’ve tried out many places. Restaurants, bars, museums — you name it — I’ve been too aplenty. There are some that stand out from others, and I’m so glad I discovered.

Here are five spots in NYC you should be sure to check out:

Alice’s Tea cup: I discovered this Alice in Wonderland inspired tea shop after my first few months in the City. They offer tons of different types of loose teas and have a full brunch and afternoon food menu. They also bake a daily menu of sweet treats (including pumpkin scones, chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake). They also sell all the teas by the pound, so you can take a little bit of the magic home.

Order this: the chocolate chai tea with the chocolate raspberry vegan scone and extra jam.

Never Forget: 14 Years Later

I remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2001. I was in high school sitting in the second row of Mrs. Reedus’s english class. Suddenly an all call came over the intercom, telling the teachers to turn on the news. There had been an “act of terrorism” against the country. We all watched in shock. It felt uncomfortable to sit there safely in Florida, while knowing other parts of the nation were experiencing such terror.

14 years later, I now work just a few blocks from Ground Zero and the Freedom Tower (here’s a picture of the latter from my office).

On New York City: Housing

A reader asked if I would share some advice on what it’s like living in New York City. She said no detail was too small, so I started to build a comprehensive — and somewhat overwhelming — post. So instead, I’ve created 3 different entries: Housing, Budgeting and Lifestyle. I hope each one will give you a realistic idea of what it’s like to live here.

I also want to preface this post by saying that I am just 1 person out of the over 8 million number of people living in the City. New Yorkers are very opinionated, so I encourage you to do more research and build a plan that will work best for you! Today’s topic… Housing.

Realness

Before moving here, I didn’t know much about NYC except what I saw through the eyes of the fabulous foursome featured on Sex and the City. Obviously I’d spent many hours envisioning my life here (which included an idyllic apartment).
